Obituaries

Nelles Charles Koenig, of Hanover, passed away at Walkerton Hospital, on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. He was 85. 

Born in Walkerton, Ontario, on August 20, 1937, to the late Milton and Bertha (nee Filsinger) Koenig. Nelles resided in many areas during his lifetime, and people may remember him from years he lived in Ayton, Toronto, Wainfleet, and Hanover, and the various churches he attended in these areas. Nelles was a hardworking man who took great pride in his work, ensuring everything was always done well, and organized meticulously.  These traits saw him have great success at the many different jobs he held throughout his career, ranging from helping his dad at their implement sales and machine shop in Ayton (MH Koenig & Sons), to bookkeeping and administration at Lorne Smith Fuels/Sunoco Oil, to working as a labourer in on the production floor at Sklar Peppler and Canada Bread (Jane Parker).  Nelles was also very generous with his time he dedicated to volunteering to help out many charities and programs, from the Gideons, to Carrick Camp, senior's homes in Welland and Wainfleet, to the Young at Heart youth group program at Hanover Missionary Church, to 10+ years of assisting at the Hanover Day-Away program run by Home & Community Support Services (HCSS). 

Loved father of JoAnn Switzer of Hanover, Glen (Kim) Koenig of St. Thomas, Linda (Randy) Becker of Hanover, Wanda (Warren) McCall of Victoria, B.C., and Rebecca (David) Heane of England. Cherished grandfather of 12, and great grandfather of 14. Fondly remembered by siblings Pauline Leonard of Windsor, Sharon (William) LaChance of Windsor, sister-in-law Judi Koenig of Hanover. Predeceased by his parents, grandchild Dawn Koenig, brother Charles, sister Shirley (and husband Hib) Holmes, and brother-in-law Gilles Leonard. 

A Private Graveside Memorial Service and internment of ashes will be held at Ayton Cemetery (349 Augusta St, Ayton). A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, starting at 2:30 pm at the Hanover Missionary Church, with words of remembrance commencing at 3pm. Pastor Connie Giroux officiating.
